The work of what might be termed the Revenue Branch of this office is so heavy and has increased to such an extent within the last few years that it is almost impossible with the present staff (consisting of Messrs. Tsang and Lo, and myself) to cope with the work satisfactorily without much extra assistance.
My duties are the keeping of all books in connection with Victoria Rates, Crown Rent, Suitors' Fund (Cash Book), Piers, Non-Leased Lands, &c. and, as you are aware, my time is generally fully occupied, whilst for at least five months of the year it is necessary for me to remain in office up to 5.30, 6, and even 6.30 p.m. every day (including Saturdays) in order to keep my work from falling in arrears: it is also not unusual for me to work on Sundays during the busy months of the year. Roughly, my time, taken month by month, is occupied as follows:
January: balancing the Rent Roll and writing up arrears in the new Roll, writing up new book for Piers, Lands not Leased; collection of Rates and Crown Rent, examining applications for Refunds of Rates.
February.
